Intelligent locks - a safe bet for ASSA ABLOY

Unique engineering and microelectronic data chips – it’s the “key” to the next generation of lock systems. Stefan Gyökeres is project manager for lock-related software at Assa AB. In his view, “This technology will transform the lock industry and provide our customers with greater flexibility.”

The lock systems of tomorrow are just around the corner. Keys and cylinders will fit each other not only mechanically, but electronically as well. The Assa Abloy group is in the home stretch of developing its revolutionary new technology. The system, which is called CLIQ within the group and Twin CLIQ in Sweden, employs the latest mechanical and electronic technologies.

In a nutshell, each Twin CLIQ key contains a data chip that is validated by the cylinder’s chip. A tiny battery in the key powers the exchange of data between the two chips. Since the cylinder does not require any power of its own, no wiring has to be done to install Twin CLIQ. According to Gyökeres, “The system components are so small that there’s room for all of them in the key and cylinder. Given that the Twin CLIQ cylinders are the same size as Assa’s previous models, upgrading to the new technology is a simple matter.”

Thus, you don’t have to replace any doors as long as you have a relatively new lock system. And that means that you can install Twin CLIQ quite economically. The lock system is designed to maximize both user-friendliness and security.

The Assa Security Master (ASM) program on which Cybercom is collaborating involves making lock diagrams.

That’s the time at which the number of cylinders, users, keys and authorizations are determined. After collecting the data for ASM, a group of locksmiths will submit it to Assa for the manufacture of keys and cylinders. Cybercom is also involved in the development of the Assa Performer software. One thing the software will be able to do is permit a company’s security director to give temporary employees keys that are programmed for a specific authorization level and period of validity. The lock system is run by connecting a “setup key” to a computer and downloading data from the Assa Performer program. The person in charge then goes to each door in the corresponding system, inserts the key and transmits the data to the cylinder.
