Hotspot solution for operators - Blue2Chile

Wireless telephony and Internet in one smart system
Wireless communication is skyrocketing – thanks to merging Internet and telephony technologies. Blue2Chile, South America’s most impressive network of surfing zones, is one example. Here, Cybercom was involved with across-the-board development.

“We helped to create Blue2Chile and to combine regular wireless Internet with Bluetooth and wireless local area network technologies,” says Magnus Månsson wireless expert at Cybercom.

Telefonica del Sur is one of Chile’s leading operators, which invested in wireless Internet and thus launched Blue2Chile – a co-operative effort to distribute new technologies for hotspots, i.e., public Internet zones. Besides wireless Web usage, there will be opportunities to make phone calls via access points, at considerably lower prices than those charged for using the regular global system for mobile communication (GSM) network – something that’s attractive to customers in Chile, where GSM network services are rather expensive. Wireless communication, which occurs in public Internet zones, is based on a technology that’s gaining ground. This type of communication is an alternative and a complement to existing mobile networks.

The markets for wireless broadband or Internet via wireless local area networks are waking up after a long nap. Hotel chains, airports and cafés now provide added value for their guests by enabling wireless Internet use. And wireless communication in open landscape office areas is now on the rise. In Sweden, Cybercom participated in development of these unique solutions, with accompanying applications for customer management and pricing.

The Blue2Chile development project was precluded by a pre-study and rigorous analysis. The result? A total solution that includes network access points and a platform for authentication, network monitoring, billing and user and access-point administration.

“Wireless communication is very challenging,” says Månsson. “Access simplicity is a key factor – log-in shouldn’t be complicated. And security and stability are extremely crucial.”
