Cybercom was selected as a partner in one of the EU Commission’s research projects. The purpose? To investigate, analyse, promote, and support small- and medium-size enterprises that develop mobile services and applications for the global system for mobile communication (GSM) and the universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS).
The project is called Supporting innovation of small and medium enterprises in the mobile services and application supply business (SIMS).
The project will investigate new opportunities and challenges that the companies face because of 3G technologies. Project focus is on companies’ innovation processes, which in turn enables:
- Companies to develop their networks and to co-operate to be able to take on larger projects or to enter new markets
- Opportunities to participate in long-term research projects
- Help with financing R&D.
The project is probably a first when it comes to supporting these types of enterprises and to co-operating on a pan-European level. The Commission believes that EU competitiveness and growth increases if there are opportunities for continuous, mobile, 3G-services development.
Use of mobile services increases efficiency and competitiveness for companies and increases the quality of life for EU residents. Traditionally, European companies have been strong in mobile telecom, and they want to stay on the leading edge. Because 3G and wireless fidelity (WiFi) hot spots are being broadly introduced, adequate bandwidth now exists for new mobile applications.
Cybercom was selected because it actively develops mobile services, helps other companies develop mobile services, understands the market, and is a leader in Sweden’s wireless segment. In addition, Cybercom operates in the heart of the Nordic region and is close to the Baltic region.
Selecting Cybercom for the prestigious SIMS project proves that Cybercom has the right skills sets for mobile services. This will increase the company’s visibility as a consultant and system integrator among the project’s target groups, i.e., small- and medium-size enterprises that develop mobile services and solutions. This visibility is good for Cybercom from marketing and business-development perspectives. Six other partners are participating; one is another Swedish company: Zenterio.
Data collection will occur via interviews with many companies and organisations in the mobile services area. Conclusions, reports, and recommendations will be presented at conferences and published at www.sims-eu.com and in magazines.
